Berryville, VA — The Clarke County Education Foundation (CCEF) is excited to announce the revival of the Moe Murphy Journalism Scholarship. Originally established in 2006 by Jim and Kim Stutzman, this scholarship was created to honor students who contributed to their high school yearbook or newspaper, or who demonstrated an interest in pursuing journalism or photography. Moving forward, Moe Murphy himself will generously continue supporting this scholarship with a $500 award for aspiring journalists.
If you’re familiar with Clarke County Public Schools sports, you know the name Moe Murphy. Michael R. “Moe” Murphy, a long-time fixture in local sports journalism, was born in Morgantown, WV, and raised in Leesburg, VA, where he graduated from Loudoun County High School in 1977. He later earned a Computer Information Systems diploma with honors from Strayer University and an Advanced Biblical Studies diploma from Liberty University.
After a distinguished 29-year career with Loudoun County’s Department of Information Technology and an additional 11 years with Loudoun County Public Schools’ Safety & Security Department, Moe turned his passion for sports into a full-time venture. In 2003, he founded Clarke County Sports, a platform that has provided extensive coverage of local high school sports, area colleges, and even the Washington Redskins.
Moe’s journalism career spans multiple roles, including reporter, photographer, videographer, and editor. His work has appeared in a variety of publications, such as the Clarke Times-Courier, Loudoun Times-Mirror, Northern Virginia Daily, and Viva Loudoun, among others. He also served as Sports Editor for the Clarke Times-Courier and continues to lead Clarke County Sports as its Owner and Editor.
Currently residing in Bluemont, VA, Moe enjoys life with his dog, Roberto, and two cats, Irwin and Gray.
