The Virginia B. Lloyd Superintendent's Scholarship

The Kenneth and Barbara Thomas Memorial Scholarship

The Virginia B. Lloyd Superintendent’s Scholarships, or Vidy Lloyd teacher’s scholarship fund is in recognition of outstanding competency teachers who work in Clarke County Public Schools to assist these teachers in furthering their education.  These scholarships (amount TBD, yearly) are awarded annually by the CCEF to teachers who apply and are endorsed by their principal and Dr. Bishop to assist teachers monetarily in continuing their education.  This scholarship may be used for any training a teacher would like to pursue to further their education, including university courses or private training opportunities.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Mrs. Lloyd moved to the United States with her mother when she was 8. During World War II, Mrs. Lloyd worked for the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., and was later involved in many local organizations including the Clarke County (VA) Visiting Nurses Association, Help With Housing and the Clarke County Humane Foundation. She was also instrumental in the creation of a new county animal shelter.

In addition to her work with local organizations, Mrs. Lloyd also taught at Gerty Watkins’ kindergarten and Blue Ridge Country Day School in Millwood. Later she established a bookstore and worked at World Wide Travel, both in Winchester, Va.  Ms. Lloyd passed away at age 84 in 2006, but left funding to continue this scholarship in her memory.

The Kenneth and Barbara Thomas Memorial Endowment Scholarship was formed by the Thomas Family along with over thirty friends of the family who donated in the couple’s memory in October 2022.

Bob and Barbara lived in Clarke County for nearly 40 years, raising three sons who thrived in the Clarke County Public Schools from kindergarten through their high school graduations. The Thomases were constant supporters of the teachers and administrators in the school system. Bob appreciated the opportunity to serve as a member of the school board during the 1980s. Barbara could always be counted on to help her sons’ teachers by volunteering for a field trip or offering a helping hand and kind word. In addition to their contributions in support of the public schools, Bob and Barbara were active participants with many other organizations in Clarke County. They enjoyed singing in the choir at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, serving the FISH organization by aiding with the food pantry and providing rides to individuals in the community traveling to medical appointments, and leading fundraising efforts for the American Lung Association and American Heart Association. Bob and Barbara were amazing assets to Clarke County and are sorely missed.
